| MEETING NOTES FIPSE Project Management Group November 25, 2002 1752 Van Hise Present: Ed Meachen, Judy Brown, Rosemary Griffith, Chris Olgren, Lisa Kornetsky, Patricia Ploetz, Hal Schlais Old Business Elizabeth Quinn, a grant writer and consultant, wrote our FIPSE grant. The beginning date for the grant was officially September 1, 2002, but funds were not made available until December 1st. New Business FIPSE Conference – Ed and Judy recently attended the FIPSE Conference in Washington, D. C. Matt Champaign designed a loop, which collects and processes data constantly at the Conference. How well does his system work? Ed would like to evaluate assessment. FIPSE grants tend to be local and specific awards versus large block grants, which are more often awarded to states, systems, etc. FIPSE people generally believe that block grants are better. Distribution chances are better and information generated by the grants can be disseminated more broadly. FIPSE projects are applied research. The challenge is to move FIPSE projects into permanent application. Appointments and Responsibilities – Patricia Ploetz, from UW Stevens Point, will be replacing Jeff Larson as FIPSE Project Manager. Lisa Kornetsky, from the Office of Academic Affairs, Division of Instructional Development, attended the meeting and will be serving as a local Evaluator. Judy announced the appointment of David Hatfield as the Asst. Director of the Academic ADL Co-Lab. His most recent position was with Berbee, but he has years of experience as a learning consultant and instructor. He will be attending meetings whenever possible. Judy agreed to approach LeAnn McKenzie, Texas A&M System, Karen Vignare, Rochester Institute of Technology & Kathie Sigler, Medical Center Campus, Miami Dade Community College, to invite them to serve as advisors on the FIPSE grant. [Note following: Judy informed us later that these people have all agreed to serve in this capacity.] Position titles/assignments -- Ed Meachen – Project Director, OLIT Judy Brown – Academic ADL Co-Lab Liaison, OLIT Patricia Ploetz – Project -Manager, UW Stevens Point Chris Olgren – Project Co-Manager & Evaluation Director, UW Madison Hal Schlais – Academic Consultant, OLIT Lisa Kornetsky – Division of Instructional Development, Scholarship & Teaching, Academic Affairs, UWSA Matt Champaign – Outside Evaluator, Distance Education, Atlanta Iota Solutions Definitions of Project bodies – Oversight groups -- (1) Project Management Team -- (2) Advisory Board – consists of the three new advisors named above, along with Ed & Judy Expert Team will be faculty and instructional designers. (3) Expert Faculty Panel – different from faculty developers, could be overlap with some of the other appointed groups; focus on content and SCOs, limiting scope to concerns about pedagogical quality, assessment team for SCOs, and work with Matt’s database (4) Faculty Developers – work on developing SCOs Tasks to Accomplish – Purchase “Project” software package from DoIT. Evaluate feasibility of templates for management plan developed by Chris & Jeff. These templates include an overview, timeline, feedback, & Project status. Will these documents work and accomplish all that we want them to accomplish? Reusability of templates? Identify faculty person who can sit on the Advisory Group. Develop new contacts with the Technical Colleges. Terri Langan, from the Center for Instructional Development and Delivery, at the Fox Valley Technical College, in Appleton, might be a good contact. She has developed courses for on-line instruction. Identify a representative from the faculty development group to sit on the Advisory Board to facilitate communication. It will also be necessary for a member of the Project Management Group to sit in on all the other groups. Identify our “Expert Panel” members. Develop a list of criteria for membership on the Expert Panel, such as having taught on-line courses and or having built content for on-line instruction. There is no budget for salaries for the members of this panel. Perhaps they could be paid on a stipend from the honorarium budget line? | |
